This is what my subframe looked like when first removed:

 Lots of caked on dirt and grime from over the years. Not too bad really. And after I put a little work into it, trying to clean by hand with misc. degreasers and cleaners, I got mine looking alright, kinda like Dave N.'s here (linked to a couple of his pics):

 I figured while I've got everything apart I may as well take the extra effort to clean everything up, remove what little surface rust there is, and protect it. The powdercoating places will blast the pieces clean and free of rust (nice and simple), and the quotes I'm starting to get seem quite reasonable (only a couple hundred bucks to do everything: subframe, control arms, etc.). WHY NOT? :-)
